How We Make Our Tinctures:

Here at Susquehanna Apothecary, we know that every herb and mushroom is unique and therefore requires a distinctive method of extraction. We produce our tinctures through a unique process that merges several highly effective techniques.

Each tincture is a blend of three, or sometimes four different extracts of a specific herb: an alcohol extraction, a heated glycerin extraction, a hot-water extraction, and sometimes a cold-water extraction. Each of these extractions is further refined by tweaking certain aspects of the process to be specifically suited to the specific herb being used. For example, we utilize unique alcohol percentages for the alcohol extract, unique methods of heating and concentrating for the water extracts, and unique lengths of time for the heated glycerin extract.

The purpose of all this is to draw as many compounds from each herb into the final product as possible since different types of chemicals are better extracted by different types of solvents. By doing so, we aim to produce tinctures that are likely to induce the “entourage effect” in the people who consume them. The entourage effect is a potent, synergistic influence on the human body resulting from the many complex and beneficial interactions of the compounds unique to each herb, essentially the opposite of targeting and isolating one specific compound in the extraction process.

Susquehanna Apothecary is owned & managed by herbalists Ella Usdin & Benjamin Weiss. The aim of the apothecary is to craft the highest quality extracts of plants & fungi for use by consumers & holistic health practitioners. The apothecary also serves as a way to add value to herbs from sustainable farms in order to provide meaningful & dignified employment & educational opportunities.

Ben's time spent in wild places has repeatedly exposed him to Lyme Disease which is why the apothecary specializes in the Buhner Protocol, an herbal regimen popular with Lyme sufferers. Since joining the company in 2018, Ella has led the apothecary to produce proprietary formulas for holistic health practitioners, and helped to create “Forager’s Formulas.”

Susquehanna Apothecary is located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. All of our products are made from responsibly grown or ethically wildcrafted plants & fungi. We use organic alcohol, oils, &  glycerin. All of our products are made with reverence & love for the Earth & all of her inhabitants in a state of mind conducive to healing.
